Oh! Ciao is a neighbourhood message board. It shows posts made within a few kilometres of where you are. It is run by an individual, not a company. You can reach us at info@ohciao.com.
When you open Oh! Ciao, your browser asks whether you want to share your location. If you allow it, the coordinates are used in your browser to look up nearby posts. Looking at the feed does not save your location anywhere.
When you post or reply, a location is saved with it. Before saving, the coordinates are rounded to three decimal places — roughly 100 metres. We do not keep the original, precise coordinates.
The feed never shows coordinates. It shows only a distance, and at a deliberately coarse level: "Nearby", "~800m", "~2.4km".
If you decline location access, or pick a spot on the map instead, the location you picked is used in place of your device's.
So that you can edit and delete your own posts, Oh! Ciao signs you in anonymously. This creates a random identifier stored with your posts. It contains no name, email address or password, and it is not linked to any other service.
The identifier lives in your browser. If you clear your browser data, or use a different browser or device, you become a new anonymous user — and you will no longer be able to edit or delete posts you made before.
Your display name (optional), the text of your posts and replies, and the times they were created or edited.
If you report a post, we store which post it was, your anonymous identifier, the reason you selected, and the time. Your identifier is stored so that the same person cannot report the same post repeatedly.
As with any website, the services that deliver Oh! Ciao receive your IP address and basic browser information as part of normal web traffic.
Oh! Ciao keeps a few things in your browser's local storage:
Clearing your browser data removes them. Google Analytics also sets its own cookies; see section 4.
Oh! Ciao relies on a small number of outside services. They receive your IP address, because that is how the web works.
When you delete a post or reply, it stops being shown to everyone immediately. The record itself is kept, so that threads do not fall apart and so that abuse can be investigated. The same applies to posts hidden after being reported.
If you want something removed completely, email info@ohciao.com and tell us what to remove. Because posting is anonymous, we may not be able to confirm that a post was yours.
If you are in the EEA or the UK: location is used on the basis of your consent, which you give through your browser's permission prompt and can withdraw at any time in your browser settings. Running the board and preventing abuse rests on legitimate interests.
Oh! Ciao is not intended for children under 13, or under 16 where local law sets that age. Please do not use it if you are younger than that.
The key that the page uses to talk to the database is public by design; it grants no direct access to any table. Every read and write goes through database functions that decide what may be seen and changed, and precise coordinates are never returned by any of them. That said, no service can promise perfect security.
If this policy changes, the new version will appear on this page with a new date at the top.
